La Llorona

About

La Llorona is a process-focused work of experimental research taking place in Toronto, Canada. It is an exploration into dance, horror, digital collage, and abject costumes of silken slime. A collective of artists takes an immersive look into the legend of La Lorona, aiming to find and create physical embodiments of her story.

The collective is composed of Sofi Gudiño (dance, direction), Rica Gudiño (digital and spiritual artist), Mad LeBlanc (costume design), Sofia Fly (sound design), Charissa Wilcox (set design), and Jamila Noritz Reyes (photography). This project began with Sofi’s inspiration to delve into the character of Mexican folklore, La Llorona, through experimental costuming, movement and digital landscape.

This project was made possible in 2022 and 2023 by the support of the Ontario Arts Council, Canada Council for the Arts, and our community partners at Underscore Projects.
